Gripper ratings are the numbers manufacturers assign to torsion-spring hand grippers to indicate roughly how much force is needed to close them. They give trainees and competitors a common vocabulary for difficulty, but the number stamped or named on a gripper is nominal, not a precise measurement of that individual unit.

What a rating means
A torsion-spring gripper stores energy in a coiled spring joined to two handles. The rating is an approximation of the force, applied at a standard point on the handles, required to bring the handles together until they touch. Most consumer scales express this in pounds, so a higher number denotes a stiffer spring and a harder close.
Because the rating describes a model rather than a physical object, it functions like a shoe size. It tells you the intended range, but the fit of any single pair still varies. For casual training this is unimportant. For anyone chasing a specific benchmark or preparing for a certification, the distinction becomes central.
Why ratings vary unit to unit
Every torsion-spring gripper is a manufactured object subject to tolerance. Spring wire diameter, coil geometry, heat treatment, handle length, and knurl position all influence closing force, and each varies slightly within a production run. Two grippers sold under the same rating can therefore require noticeably different force.
Handle spread matters as well. Grippers with wider set handles demand more force to begin the close because the spring is under less initial tension at rest, which lengthens the sticking point. A gripper is also affected by break-in: repeated closing can soften a spring over time, so a well-used unit may close easier than a new one of the same rating.
The rating names the model, not the object in your hand. Treat any single gripper's number as an estimate until it is measured.
Nominal versus calibrated ratings
The industry distinguishes between two kinds of rating.
A nominal rating is the manufacturer's target for the model. It is what the gripper is named or labeled, and it reflects the intended spec rather than a test of the specific unit shipped to you.
A calibrated rating is a measurement of one physical gripper. Calibration is performed by pulling the handles closed against a load cell or a hanging-weight rig under a defined protocol, recording the actual force to close that unit at a stated handle position. A calibrated gripper therefore carries a number that reflects its true difficulty rather than its label.
Calibration matters because the gap between nominal and actual can be large enough to change whether a close counts. Serious grip athletes often seek calibrated grippers so that a training or contest close is verifiable and comparable to others. The exact protocols, reference points, and tolerances differ between calibrators, so a calibrated number is only meaningful alongside the method used to obtain it.
Common rating scales
The most widely referenced consumer scale is the numbered line of Captains of Crush grippers, which uses named levels paired with approximate pound ratings. These are nominal by design, and the manufacturer has always described them as targets rather than guarantees for any individual unit. - Beginners: pick a gripper you can close for reps, not a max, and expect the label to be approximate.
- Intermediate: buy adjacent ratings to bridge gaps, since a single number rarely matches your exact level.
- Advanced and competitors: seek calibrated units and record the calibration method, not just the number.
Using ratings sensibly
Treat the printed rating as a starting estimate. When difficulty needs to be exact, for tracking progress precisely, comparing to a standard, or preparing to meet a certification requirement, rely on a calibrated figure and note the method behind it.
