How grip sport standardizes and calibrates competition implements, and why it matters for fair results.

Equipment Standards

Equipment standards are the published specifications that define what a competition implement must be: its dimensions, weight, surface, and loading method. In grip sport, where a lift can be won or lost by a fraction of a kilogram, standardized and calibrated equipment is what makes a result mean the same thing in two different gyms on two different continents.

Why standards exist

  • A recorded lift is only comparable if the implement is comparable.
  • Calibration keeps loaded weight honest across venues.
  • Sanctioning bodies approve models so records are portable.
  • Standard surfaces and diameters remove hidden advantages.

Why calibration and standardization matter

Grip is unusually sensitive to equipment. A handle that is a few millimeters thicker, a knurl that is a little more aggressive, or a plate set that reads heavy on a cheap scale can each shift the outcome of an attempt. Two problems follow from this sensitivity.

The first is comparability. If one athlete pulls a rotating handle of one diameter and another pulls a slightly different handle, their numbers are not measuring the same task. Standardization fixes the implement so that the score reflects the athlete, not the hardware.

The second is honesty of load. Bars, plates, and fixed dumbbells drift from their nominal weight through manufacturing tolerance, wear, and paint. Calibration is the process of checking loaded weight against a certified reference scale and recording the true figure, so that a stated total on the scoresheet matches what the athlete actually held.

A record is a claim that a specific task was completed at a specific load. Without a standard implement and a calibrated load, that claim cannot be verified or repeated.

The role of sanctioning bodies

Standards are written and enforced by sanctioning bodies, the organizations that govern competitions and maintain records. Their equipment role has three parts.

Approval of implements

Sanctioning bodies designate which specific make and model of an implement is legal for record purposes. Approving a named product, rather than a generic description, removes ambiguity: everyone knows exactly which handle, gripper, or block is in play. Grip Sport International and national bodies publish these approved lists and update them as new equipment is validated.

Inspection and calibration

Before an event, approved implements are inspected for damage, modification, and wear, and loaded weights are verified against a certified scale. Personal equipment is typically allowed only for warm-up, never for a counted attempt. On the day, no modification to competition equipment is permitted.

Rule integration

Equipment standards do not stand alone; they are enforced alongside the competition rules that govern attempts, judging, and holds. A lift on a legal implement still has to satisfy the movement standard, such as clearing a set height, controlling the implement, and holding a locked position for the required count.

Common standardized implements

Grip sport competitions are usually multi-event, and most sanctioned meets draw from a shared set of standardized implements. The categories below are among the most widely used.

Rotating handle

  • A thick, freely spinning handle loaded through a hanging pin.
  • The rotation removes any assist from the fingertips, isolating the crush and support of the hand.
  • Diameter and rotation are fixed by the approved model so results compare directly.

Hand grippers

  • Torsion-spring grippers certified at graded strength levels.
  • A legal close usually requires the handles to touch and to be held briefly under a judge.
  • Setting rules (how far the handle may be adjusted before the squeeze) are part of the standard.

Pinch and hub

  • Pinch blocks and hub-style plates loaded with the thumb opposing the fingers.
  • Surface texture and block width are specified so the task is consistent.
  • Lift height and control requirements come from the movement standard.

Support-grip and crushing events round out the common program. Across all of these, the shared principle is the same: fix the implement, verify the load, and judge the movement.

Where standards come from

Standards evolve. A body may adopt a popular commercial implement because a large base of athletes already trains on it, then formalize its specifications so future units match. When manufacturers change a product, the body decides whether the new version remains approved or is treated as a separate implement with its own records. This is why record lists are often tied to a named model rather than to a generic event.
