Key facts

  • Discipline: armlifting, the loaded-apparatus branch of grip sport
  • President: Riccardo Magni
  • Flagship series: the World Super Series, run in stages across a season
  • Marquee stops: Arnold Classic, Shaw Classic, World Armlifting Championships
  • Governance tools: referee certification, video-verified leaderboards

Armlifting USA is a United States federation for armlifting, the branch of grip sport in which a single implement is loaded on a pin or bar and pulled for a maximum. It is led by president Riccardo Magni and organizes competition through a season-long series along with sanctioned meets held at large strength and fitness expositions. Armlifting sits alongside the broader contest calendar run by Grip Sport International, and the two federations are part of the same wider landscape of grip sanctioning bodies.

What armlifting is

Armlifting is the apparatus-based, maximum-effort side of grip sport. Rather than crushing a spring gripper or pinching plates, an athlete grips a purpose-built handle or bar that is loaded with weight and lifts it from the floor to a fixed height. The demand is almost entirely on the hand, wrist, and forearm, because the implement is designed so that the limiting factor is grip rather than the legs or back.

Implements that appear in Armlifting USA competition include a 2 inch rotating Rolling Thunder style handle, a 2 by 5 inch Saxon bar, a Rogue axle, a freestyle hub, various blobs, Fat Gripz, an Inch dumbbell, and odd pieces such as a grandfather clock and a hilt. Many of these implements rotate freely or present an awkward thickness, so a lift is judged on whether the athlete can control and stand the weight to the required height, not merely break it from the floor.

Armlifting loads a single grip implement for a one-rep maximum. Success is decided by the hand, not the whole-body pull, which is what separates it from conventional deadlifting.

The World Super Series

The federation's central competition is the World Super Series, a season-long points series run in stages. A first stage runs through the spring and a second stage opens from the start of July. Individual venues are sanctioned separately, and sanctioning for a stop can stay open until the morning of its final competition day, which lets late-added venues join a stage in progress.

Verification is built into the format. Athletes submit lifting video alongside their numbers, and official stage results are not released until every participating venue has returned both its scores and its footage. This keeps a distributed, multi-city series consistent, since results from an early venue cannot be published before later venues have lifted.

Championship meets

Armlifting USA anchors its season on armlifting competitions held inside major strength events:

  • The Arnold Classic armlifting championships in Columbus, Ohio.
  • The Shaw Classic armlifting meet.
  • The World Armlifting Championships, held at the Mr. Olympia weekend in Las Vegas.

Qualification is meet-driven. Results at these stops are organized by weight class, with qualifiers identified in the published standings. Early-entry paths into a Worlds field have included previous Worlds medalists, Arnold medalists, Shaw Classic medalists, a top-five finish in the current Super Series first stage, plus international guests and invited lifters. Registration windows are commonly tied to logistics such as gear and medal ordering, so entry deadlines can close ahead of the competition date.

Governance and integrity

The federation has been building standardized administration around its meets. A referee certification program formalizes officiating, and a video-submission leaderboard program records verified results across the season. Consistent with that verification focus, only lifts performed at sanctioned official meets count toward the leaderboards; training lifts do not qualify. These tools give a geographically spread series a common standard for what counts as an official result.

Expansion

Alongside its championship stops, Armlifting USA has published lists of target cities for growth, naming more than a dozen metropolitan areas across the country as candidates for new sanctioned meets. The intent is to extend the sanctioned calendar beyond the marquee expo events into regular regional competition.
